A 2 Days Mount Nyiragongo hiking safari is an exhilarating adventure that takes you to the slopes of one of Africa’s most active and awe-inspiring volcanoes, located in the Virunga Mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This challenging yet rewarding begins at the Kibati Ranger Post, from where you will embark on a steep and scenic ascent through lush rainforests and rugged lava flows, accompanied by expert guides and porters who will provide insight into the Volcano’s unique geology and ecosystem.
As you climb higher, the landscape shits to reveal stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, culminating in a breathtaking sunset at the crater rim, where you will set up camp for the night. The following day, you will descend into the crater to witness the mesmerizing sight of the world’s largest lava lake, a churning sea of molten fire that is both beautiful and humbling, creating an unforgettable experience that combines adventure, natural wonder and personal challenge.

Day 1: Pick up and transfer to Kibati and ascend the Nyiragongo Volcano.
On the 1st day of your safari, your safari guide from African Vacation Safaris will pick you up from Kigali International Airport or from your hotel in Kigali or Goma. He will welcome you and brief you about the 2 days Mount Nyiragongo hiking safari. He will transfer you to Kibati, you will cross the Grande Barriere border crossing early in the morning at around 7 am and you will check in at the Virunga tourist, office at exactly 8am in the morning, the Virunga tourism office is located inside Grande Barriere border crossing building that is slightly opposite the passport control and this is where you get your Nyiragongo trekking permit that will be presented at when you are starting your hiking safari.
After getting your trekking permit you will ascend the Nyiragongo volcano, and first transferred to Kabiti which is the starting point of the Virunga hikes, and get a briefing about the trekking, on the same point that where you can opt to hire and get a porter that will help you carry your luggage and also help you in hiking in case the hiking gets tough. At exactly 10 am you will immediately start to ascend the Nyiragongo volcano and have the opportunity to sight the beautiful landscape with the beautiful views of the Virunga volcanos and the surroundings that is animal species and bird species and among many others. Along the way, you will enjoy your lunch during hiking safari.
Hiking Nyiragongo can take around 6 hours and mostly of the hikers reach the summit by 5pm. And once you reach the summit, you will have the wonderful views and encounter the thrilling with the world’s largest lava lake before you that is exceptional. You will later transfer to your camp for dinner, relaxation and overnight stay.
Day 2: Descend Nyiragongo and Departure.
On the final day of the safari, this is when you will descend the Nyiragongo, you will wake up early in the morning and enjoy the breakfast at the summit and explore through gazing at the lava lake for the last time, with the exceptional views, and then later embark on to descend the Nyiragongo towards 6:30 am, and descending is faster, and once you reach bottom of the Nyiragongo volcano you will depart that make your Nyiragongo hiking safari come to the end.
Your Congo safari guide will drop you to your place of convenience that is either Goma, or transfer back to Rwanda, Kigali International Airport or to hotel in Kigali you will have enroute lunch along the way. That will make your safari come to the end.
