Blending experiences in Maputo

This eight-day overland adventure in Mozambique begins in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique. It presents a lively and diverse blend of cultures while also serving as the nation’s economic hub. The city’s trade history has introduced cultures from every corner of the globe, evident in its architecture and, naturally, its cuisine. Piri-piri chicken! Absolutely, that sounds great.

Upon checking in at your hotel and meeting your overland crew and fellow travelers, you will have the opportunity to explore the city’s attractions, including the Fortress and the Railway Station, on a detailed walking tour led by a local guide. A visit to the city is not truly complete without exploring the central and FEIMA markets, where you can find a distinctive array of crafts—it’s an experience that won’t let you down! This evening, we will dine out together and have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the vibrant night-life of this fascinating city.

Day 1: Sundowners in Xai Xai

With a sense of rejuvenation, we proceed on our journey towards the Xai-Xai district. We will arrive in the late afternoon, allowing just enough time for a leisurely stroll along the beach with a sundowner in hand. There is nothing quite like a Southern African sunset as it descends behind the horizon of the Indian Ocean, its crimson glow illuminating the untouched shoreline. Have we discovered paradise? Certainly.

Xai Xai embodies the essence of rustic Mozambique, featuring delightful, eco-conscious hotels that gaze upon stunningly beautiful beaches, with scenery that is simply awe-inspiring. Days can be effortlessly spent diving and fishing in the deep waters, picking coconuts and trading with locals for avocados, or just strolling along the expansive beaches, sand beneath your feet and the breeze in your hair. Seize the moment—capture that fresh profile picture!

Day 2: Next Stop, Vilanculos

This morning, we will pause in Vilanculos, where you can explore the market and the historic streets of this former slave trading port. If you seek a thrilling experience, your overland guide will organize one of the renowned Dhow ferries to transport you across the bay. The robust old boats have navigated the East Coast of Africa for centuries, and the journey across the bay offers an authentic local experience.

Your 8-day overland adventure in Mozambique progresses today as you journey north to your next destination, Vilanculos. The phrase “Africa time” likely originated in Vilanculos, a small tropical village located along Mozambique’s southern Indian Ocean coastline. It has a relaxed vibe that you will soon come to appreciate.

Day 3: Sun, Sand and Sea

Today, you will embark on a traditional dhow sailing boat trip to the island of Magaruque, where you can enjoy a day of exploration or snorkeling. Go ahead, immerse yourself in the crystal-clear water. Relax beneath the palm trees, allowing your space to be shared only with a few wandering coconut crabs.

Enjoy a day immersed in beach life—swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing. Upon returning to your lodge, make your way to one of the beach bars and indulge in an afternoon beer or a signature rum and raspberry.

Day 4 – 5: Inhambane

With any luck and not too much of a headache from the previous night, we’ll rise early to begin this Escape to Mozambique tour. We will depart from the vibrant city of Maputo, traveling through the dust as we journey along the Mozambican coastline towards Inhambane. Today is focused on savoring the open road, cruising along palm-lined streets filled with locals and vibrant roadside markets.

Many areas of Mozambique are incredibly remote (which is part of its charm!), but be advised—this is not a refined destination filled with the glitz and glamour found in some of its Indian Ocean counterparts. The greatest advantage is that you won’t face large crowds of tourists!

Day 6: Inhambane

Today you embark on a brief trip to Tofo to relish a day at another famous beach in Mozambique. Tofo features a number of popular beach bars, a charming market, and safe swimming opportunities. This location serves as the perfect spot for a day excursion. The addition of a second day allows us to adapt to the weather conditions and ensures that you can engage in as many activities as possible.

Day 7 – 8: Depart to Maputo

Today marks the conclusion of this 8-day overland adventure in Mozambique. This morning, early risers can enjoy one final sunrise on the beach before we make our way back to Maputo, marking the end of our tour upon arrival.
