Akagera National Park : Compared to Masai Mara and Serengeti, Akagera offers a more endearing feeling of being thousands of miles away from the world. Why? The park isn’t crowded with tourists to ruin your views of wildlife, inclusive of elephants, buffalos, leopards, lions, rhinos, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, zebra, hyena and a variety of the antelope species. In terms of scenery, it is richly endowed with all the good things you can find in a tropical jungle; stunning crater lakes, rolling hills, lots of pure air ..the list is endless.
To offer you better chances of encountering wildlife, we shall organize a game drive early morning when they are actively searching for food. The best place to head out for a game drive is the Northern section of the park as it has a richer concentration of wildlife. The guide who will lead you on this trip goes out of his way to deliver a wonderful and engaging experience…and the animals join in on the fun. Brace yourself for that exciting moment when animals cross the road right in front of you.
In case you don’t register luck with seeing lions and leopards during the day game drive, we can arrange for a night game drive, a time when they hunt, taking advantage of the poor night vision of prey. Another must do is the boat ride on Lake Ihema which offers a relaxed way of viewing wildlife as the congregate along the shoreline to drink water. The cruise takes an average two hours during which you are likely to witness hippos and crocodiles clash over territorial rights.
In an effort to restore the park’s glory following a massive poaching that befell it in early 1990S, plans are underway to re-introduce more wildlife now that the community appreciates the need to conserve wildlife as they are direct beneficiaries of tourism. Out of the seven lions that were reintroduced in 2015, the lionesses have since given birth to 7 cubs. This brings the total lion count to 14.
Brace yourself for a heartwarming trumpet welcome from Mitware – the park’s most famous elephant. A visit to Lake Rwanyakazinga will treat you to the delightful sight of hippopotamus, crocodiles, waterbucks, giraffes, zebras. In short, Akagera has a lot of activities for both young and adults.
State of roads
It doesn’t matter whether you visit in the dry or wet season, our fleet of cars is designed for off road adventures and can easily maneuver over the muddy trails if it rains. Even better, they have a pop up roof through which you can have unobstructed views of wildlife without exposing yourself to attacks by troublesome animals.
If you wish to get better discounts to the high end lodges, it is better to visit in the low tourism season.

Travel tip
As expected of any big 5 destination, some sections of the park has tse tse flies, but this isn’t much of a problem if you bring insect repellants.
If travelling in the rainy season of April, carry with you warm clothing because the park gets very cold at night.
