Gishwati-Mukura National Park : Named after two major forests that make it, Gishwati-Mukura is Rwanda’s newest national park, as located in the Western part of the country. Its main draw of tourists is a chimpanzee trekking excursion that further offers astounding encounters with golden monkeys, l’hoest monkeys and blue monkeys.
The park was established in 2015 to protect an endangered population of wildlife that was on the verge of being homeless following the shrinking of their habitat from 2500km2 to just 35km2 today(by locals). Following this development, you still stand considerable chances of encountering its birdlife, as highlighted by 14 Albertine Rift endemics, including red-throated alethe and Rwenzori turaco.
At present, most of its trails are just being established. Because they are still in a virgin state, it is possible for you to stumble upon lots of wildlife to whom the park is home. Put simply, the park is an A-list destination for enthusiasts of tough hiking challenges.
The hike to its fragile heart is highlighted by climbing over fallen trees, getting past bogs and crawling through thickets. The adventure is climaxed with a happy ending at the refreshing Kazeneza Falls that tumbles down rocks. Given some time and support, this forest will be a delight to explore having regained its old world charm.
That said, if you want a hustle free nature walk, Volcanoes National Park offers a perfect alternative. It has a well-developed network of over 30 trails, several of which are suitable for beginners. The park is within two hours drive from Kigali International Airport.
As such, it is possible to fly out as soon as your hike is done—if you have limited time. However if you don’t, then don’t hesitate to sample its mountain gorilla trekking experience. It offers an awesome dose of nature.
