Detailed Itinerary of 16-Day Zimbabwe Botswana Game Trail

Day 1-2: Kruger National Park

On arrival at the airport or after breakfast at your hotel, you will met by an African Vacations Safaris Representative and embark on a journey from Johannesburg, head northeast into Kruger National Park – a world famous wildlife park. You will visit the remote and seldom – visited northern part of the park from Letaba to Pafuri.

You will enjoy early morning and afternoon game drives in the comfort of a safari vehicle and enjoy spotting several animals including lions, elephants, rhinos and other animals in this iconic wildlife conservation.

Day 3: Great Zimbabwe

Enter Zimbabwe at the Beit Bridge border post and travelling to town of Masvingo and the Great Zimbabwe Monuments. The well-preserved ruins are some of the oldest and largest stone structures in Southern Africa, built during the 11th to 14 centuries.  Explore the mysteries of these ancient stone structures and the civilization that built them on foot.

Day 4-5: Matobo National Park

Head on to Bulawayo, you will arrive late in the afternoon and head to your lodge in the park, before enjoying a sundowner and an evening around the campfire.

The following morning, you will head to Matobo National Park with a local guide to visit the core of the Matopos Hills, an area of granite koppies and wooded valleys. From our open-vehicles, you will get a clear view of the historical site of Cecil John Rhodes’ grave and discover the unusual rock formations characteristic of this area. As part of your visit, you will take a guided walk to track and hopefully find endangered white rhinos, as well as other wildlife, and view bushman rocking paintings.

Matobo National Park

Day 6-7: Hwange National Park

Named after a local Nhanzwa Chief, Hwange National Park is the largest park in Zimbabwe with a size of 14,650 square kilometers. The park is located in the north-west corner of the country, Hwange is famous for its large elephant population and during the game drives you will see many of them.

Day 8-9: Victoria Falls

You will for two nights in the beautiful town of Victoria Falls. Here, you will enjoy spectacular walk through tropical vegetation to the very edge of the majestic Victoria falls locally known as “MosioaTunya” or “the smoke that thunders”. There are several activities to do including white water rafting, bungee jump or a flight of angels (on your own expense).

Day 10: Chobe National Park

Cross over to Botswana and head to Chobe National Park, check in at your lodge in the town of Kasane on the banks of the Chobe River. The River flows lazily along the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park attracting some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa.

Today’s highlight is the afternoon game viewing “sundowner” cruise where you can see a large number of elephants and other wildlife as they quench their thirst at the end of the day.

Day 11: Gweta

This morning, you have an opportunity to enjoy an optional game drive in the Chobe National Park. Heading south through the Kasane Forest Reserve as you make your way to Gweta for an overnight stop. Here you will check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 12-14: Okavango Delta

Have an early start with a delicious breakfast, then depart for Maun, for a transfer into the delta by an open safari vehicle. Our local guides will take you deep into the heart of the Okavango Delta on a Mokoro (dug-out canoe). Being gently pulled through the network of channels is an experience not to be missed. The delta which forms as rainwater from the Angolan highland flows out over the Kalahari Desert sands in this amazingly dynamic environment and enjoy bush walks, bird watching and swimming in the clear water.

On Day 14, you will return to Maun in the afternoon and have time for an option game flight over the Okavango Delta (on your own expense) which will reveal a different aspect of the delta.

Day 15: Khama Rhino Sanctuary

After breakfast, head south from Maun, drive through the wide open spaces of the Kalahari Desert on your way to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. This is a community-based wildlife project established in 1992 to assist in saving the extinct rhinos, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Botswana Community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources. Expect to spot some of the elusive rhinos on an afternoon game drive.
