Sioma Ngwezi National Park : The park spans 5000 square kilometres and is situated in the southwestern corner of the country. It is located in a remote area of the country and has seen little tourism until just a year ago. It is indeed encompassed by the 35,000 square kilometre Game Management Area.
The entire park is without fences, allowing for the easy movement of animals throughout the area, including access to the GMA and the Zambezi River. This route creates a migratory corridor for animals like the elephants, traveling from Botswana and Namibia’s neighboring national parks, providing a sanctuary from the rampant poaching in Angola.
The park has very few permanent services and limited road access. At this time, three operators conduct guided safaris into the park. While it is possible to travel in a private vehicle, the insufficient routes make it quite a challenging task. It is, nevertheless, advisable to obtain a game scout from the National Parks office.

When To Visit Sioma Ngwezi National Park
Sioma Ngwezi National Park is accessible year-round, but the ideal time to visit the national parks of Sioma Ngwezi and Ngonye Falls is in May or early June, just after the rainy season. The best period to observe wildlife, as most of Sioma Ngwezi’s dambos (wetland lakes) retain water. There are no permanent water sources, leading animals to migrate in search of water during the dry season. This period offers an excellent opportunity to observe the various herds as they move, unlike the time from December to April when navigating the roads can become challenging.
